Children & Families

The Standing Committee looks at issues affecting the welfare of children and their families and the services that local authorities provide to support them. The agenda on this standing committee is currently dominated by issues around child protection, residential child care and changes in adoption and fostering legislation.

The recent high profile child deaths that have gripped the media have thrown child protection issues into the media spotlight and the committee is concerned that there are no impulsive reactions to these tragic events. Instead, the committee is keen to have constructive conversations about child protection with government and parliament.

The Committee is also currently spending a lot of time looking at and advising on the implications of the national review of residential child care and the implications for local authorities. ADSW is working closely with Scottish Government and Scottish Institute for Residential Child Care on this agenda.
