Annual Conference 2011 - What is to be done?

The ADSW Conference 2011 included a programme of diverse and challenging speakers discussing issues pertaining to the massive challenges confronting social work services in Scotland. The strapline “What is to be done?” (a Lenin quote) was chosen to both emphasis the revolutionary nature of much of what lies ahead, but also to signal that local authority social work has the power to influence and shape the future. We are the people best placed to identify ways of protecting and enhancing the services on which our vulnerable people depend.

Presidents’ Speech, Andrew Lowe

Peter MacLeod, Vice President of ADSW took us through the implications of the ADSW manifesto with in the political landscape. He recognised that we need to modernise but not lose sight of principles. Organisational and structural change should be based on evidence and outcomes, ‘form should follow function”.

Sir Peter Housden, Permanent Secretary for the Scottish Government looked at the key elements that would inform the Civil Service’s work in Scotland in leading the development of a renewed vision for the future. He stressed that change would not just be about money and cuts but about opportunities to improve performance that would emerge as a result of the financial pressures.

Alison Petch, Director of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services (IRISS) presented initial thinking from the research she is undertaking on behalf of ADSW - An evidence base for the delivery of Adult Services.
