Scotland's social workers appoint new leader
The Association of Director's of Social Work have appointed Sandy Riddell of Moray Council as their new leader.
Mr Riddell, who began his year long tenure as the Associations President on Thursday is Moray's Director of Education and Social Work. He takes over the reins from Peter Macleod of Renfrewshire Council and brings with him Harry Stevenson of South Lanarkshire Council as his depute and president elect.
Commenting on his new post, Mr Riddell said: "The year ahead for social work will be crucial with fundamental changes to the way social work operates being introduced through the Health and Social Care Integration bill, the implementation of the Self-Directed Support legislation and changes to our criminal justice services, expected to be announced in the Autumn.
"This is a busy legislative programme and comes at a time when demand for social work services has never been higher. But, this context presents great opportunities for the profession to make things better for the 680,000 people in Scotland who rely on our support each year.
"Social work is a life-line service for many people and makes a unique and valued contribution to the lives of those experiencing difficult times. I look forward to leading the Association, to grasping these opportunities and to play my part in helping make the lives of vulnerable people in our communities as good as they can be."
